12 week update on total knee replacement

Three months out and my knee is doing really well! I'm able to do most anything I want including kneeling! I'm back running 4-5 times a week, 3 miles at a time, very slow, but its' still running! I still have a long way to go to strengthen the knee and quad, but I'm working hard at it! I've been doing a lot of cycling and that does not bother my knee at all. I go back to the doctor at the end of the month for a checkup. I still can't completely straighten it, although it doesn't seem to bother me as I don't walk with a limp. I will talk to my doctor about it, at one time he said he may put me to sleep and then crank on the knee to break away the scar tissue. We will see.
Have a great day!

Dick: I also had a right knee replacement 7 months ago and am doing very well.
I bike a lot and exercise at the gym. I ran many years including marathons. I am 66 and was told running is very bad for a knee prostesis. Glad you are running again and doing well. What was your surgeon's advice? Thanks

Dick,
My wife had TKR last June followed by two manipulations under anesthesia. They were only able to manipulate her to 115 degree bend due to excessive scar tissue. Through intense therapy she has achieved about 125-130 degree bend, but still has some dfficulty straigtening. She will be through her therapy at the end of April, which will make it 10 months. She has been a runner since 1982 and would like to get back at it. Was there a particluar knee replacement she should have had or are doctors just being cautious not recommending running for her? We know of some others who have appeared to get back to it.

My knee replacement is scheduled for Monday. I'm glad I found this post. My main concern is that I be able to surf, cycle and (perhaps) speedskate once I've had the surgery. Then I happen upon your blog and read that you are running! Bravo!

I'm a 57 yr old active skier cyclist and former runner who is ready for replacement but putting off till we can start running on them. Huge decision.

Dick, Happy I found your blog. I am going to have 2 TKR and was interested in what brand knee you have. My husband and I were biking 75-100 miles a week before my accident. We are both 70 and very active. Cycling has become our passion. Thanks for any help you can provide.

i just stumbled on this....i guess we all have two things in common...knee replacement, and desire to run...
i'm having mine replaced sept. 22, and am hoping to run again as well....as all of you probably know, not running is like losing a loved one....having been a runner since i was 14 and being 58 now...my surgeon is telling me horror stories about doing so, but i'm reading this thinking....hmmmm.i can't help but wonder if any of you know anyone who has gotten back to running and did have horrible things happen to the knee, as in loosening up or breaking? i understand the surgeon is doing a cya in telling me the worst so i can't come back and say he approved running, nonetheless, it's not a fair and objective assesment. any feedback here?

I did running with Partial Oxford Knee Replacement for Cross Country. I was doing 2K and did not hurt my knee. Grass better than road - hard. I will race 2 of them. I had to change in run way. Can't do sprint like fast at finished.

Anyone hear about the new Journey Knee, by Smith and Nephew, that is possible to run on? CBS did a blurb on it.

Hi Dick:
Somehow I just stumbled onto this website and recognized your name from my marathoning in the 80's. I am also at the 12 week mark in my recovery from TKR, and it appears a lot of us runners would like to get back into it. I no longer plan to run marathons - maybe just trail running in the 3-6 mile range. I also do triathlon's - and I hear now there will be some aqua/bike events for those who can no longer run. I'm very light at 120lbs and find running on dirt is much better than the exact repetitive foot plant on pavement. I've tried some shuffling and have no pain, but still lack the confidence that I'll mess this up. Obviously doctors will say no to running; only my eliptical trainer, cycling and swimming - walking is good too. I'm going to sneak up on this with easy jogs and short runs, in the 2-3 mile range to see what gives. So, we'll see - btw, a good marathoner and friend from the 80's also lived in Minnesota. I believe he knew you; a Jeff Bostow, he also did Ultra's.
I live in the wet northwest in Renton, WA. Good luck in your rehab and remember - it's all mental attitude.

I had bi-lateral TKR 12 weeks ago in the desert. All was well until I moved back north to the damp and cool weather. A lot of stiffness and pain have returned. I've been walking and cycling. I understand from my OS and subsequent readings that while running on the prosthetic isn't a problem per se, high impact exercises wear it out far more quickly than low impact. I'm not sure I'd want to go through this twice.
