6 month Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Update

It's been 6 months today since I had a TKR on my left knee, it's doing super! My new right knee is now 2 years old and I don't even think about it anymore, my left one is almost to that point! I'm back training hard and running about 70 miles/week. I still have a long way to go to get where I'd like to be but it's coming! I've had incredible support from my wife Jill, friends, and Dr. Matt Heinrich! I know I may be pushing the envelope a bit but I'm listening to my body and back it off a bit when I need to. My hope God willing is to be ready to run Boston in 2012, it will be the 30th Anniversary of "Duel in the Sun" which excites me to no end!

What brand of knee do you have?...I am 40 and too young for knee replacement but I had failed scope on my 18 months ago and cant really walk..use a cane to get around....but hoping it gets better...either way I will eventally get old...

I have been running about 10K, 5-6 days a week for the last 40 years. For the last year and half I have been having severe problems with my left knee to the point that I can’t walk without pain. As per MRI I think I have to have a partial knee replacement . I would like to stay and live an active life and I planning to move to Austin area for my retirement. I would appreciate if you send me your doctor contact information. Thanks.

Dick,
I am happy to see you running again! I have a friend that is 72 and an avid runner. He wanted to know what type of knee they used. He wants to run again. Thank you.

Dick, I wrote to you earlier. Jill said you are at speaking engagements. As a high competitive runner for fifty yrs what is the name of your knee. Gotta have a knee to run on. Martin

Dick,

Your an inspiration on many levels. I am 49. Five months post left knee knee TKA. Playing racquetball again. Still need to have rightl knee done as well but having having another shoulder surgery next month. My question may seem trivial but I can't get an answer. Did you endure difficulty gaining back ROM beyond 118 degrees? I am in less pain but performance of knee is disappointing. Am I asking to much? I live in The Twin Cities and I know I might have unrealistic expectations. I travel a lot for work. Climbing the difficult route up Camelback isn't an issue but prior to TKA getting back down the same route really sucked. Worried if I do the other knee, I won't have side to side movement with the needed rate of speed. I still have pain in the knee with the TKA especially in cramped spaces like airline seats.

Your the athlete...what can I expect? What can I do to improve speed of movement. Strength is already well surpassed the non surgically repaired knee. In fact that happened at week three or four after the left knee TKA.
